Some sessions are special from the very beginning, and this one was exactly that.
I have photographed so many important milestones for Mallory over the years, so when Sean reached out to me two weeks before her Northern Kentucky University graduation session, asking if I could help him plan a surprise proposal, I was beyond excited. Truly honored is probably the better word.
Sean shared that he wanted to propose at Norse Lake on NKU's campus because it was so close to the place where he originally asked Mallory to be his girlfriend. Instantly, I knew this was going to be one of those sessions none of us would forget.
We spent the next couple of days quietly planning every detail to make sure the proposal went perfectly while still keeping it completely natural for Mallory.
The session itself started exactly how most of my sessions with Mallory go. Calm, easygoing, and full of laughter. At this point, she is basically a professional in front of my camera. We wandered around NKU capturing her graduation portraits while soaking in the beautiful evening light around campus. Between her graduation stole, cap, and celebratory champagne photos, the entire session already felt like such a huge milestone worth celebrating.
Mallory is graduating with a degree in social work, which made the session feel even more meaningful. It is always so special documenting seasons of life where years of hard work finally pay off. We popped the champagne, and Mallory was celebrating her graduation while completely unaware of the celebration to be had for what was coming.
Meanwhile, Sean was waiting for his perfect moment.
To keep the surprise believable, I casually told Mallory, "Hey, can we grab a few photos of the two of you together for my portfolio?" Completely unsuspecting, she agreed without hesitation.
We walked over near the lake and within seconds, everything changed.
I took a few shots of the two of them together to help warm Sean up, then, in true Erica fashion, I set them up for a photo with some "movement". With her back to Sean, he quietly got down on one knee. Mallory was completely unaware. I told Mallory to turn around, and she immediately went into complete shock. The kind of genuine reaction photographers dream of capturing. Happy tears, disbelief, excitement, and pure emotion all happening at once.
Watching it unfold honestly felt surreal.
There is something incredibly special about photographing moments that can never be recreated. The exact expressions, the nerves, the laughter afterward, the way they looked at each other once it finally hit that they were engaged. Those are the moments that matter the most.
As a Cincinnati wedding and senior photographer, sessions like this are such a reminder of why I love what I do so much. Photos are about more than just documenting how a moment looked. They preserve exactly how it felt.
Mallory and Sean, thank you both for trusting me to capture another huge chapter of your story. From graduation portraits to a surprise engagement at the place where your relationship began, this session was unforgettable in every way possible.
If you're thinking of proposing in Cincinnati, Ohio or nearby and dreaming up your own session, I'd love to help you create something just as beautiful!
