One of the best things you can do for your wedding photographer on your wedding day is have your details fully gathered and ready to go before we arrive.

I cannot tell you how much m=smoother the morning goes when I can walk in, greet the bride, check in on hair and makeup, grab the details box, and immediately start styling everything instead of hunting down earrings, invitation pieces, shoes, perfume, rings, and vow books from five different bags.

Not only does it save time, but it also helps create those elevated, intentional detail photos that make your gally feel complete. And honestly? The more details you include, the better.

If you're debating whether or not to bring something, BRING IT. It's always better to be over prepared than under prepared.

So, let's talk about exactly what you should include in your wedding details box to help your photographer create beautiful flay lay photos that actually feel like YOUR wedding day.

First Things First: WHat Is a Wedding Details Box?

Your details box is exactly what it sounds like. It's a designated box, tote, or container where you keep all of your wedding day details together ahead of time so everything is ready when your photographer arrives.

And when I say ahead of time, I mean BEFORE the wedding morning. Please don't wait until everyone's getting ready to start gathering details together. Wedding mornings go by so much faster than you think they will.

Having everything organized beforehand makes the morning feel calmer, smoother, and way less chaotic for everyone involved.

My Biggest tip? Include MORE than you think you need

This is probably the advice I repeat most to my brides.

Include as much as possible.

Even if you aren't sure something will photograph well, include it anyways. Some of my favorite detail photos have come from things couples almost didn't bring.

I once photographed a groom's ring that had scripture engraved inside of it, and it ended up being one of the most meaningful detail shots from the entire day. And I had no idea until the bride told me last minute.

Those little personal touches are what make your gallery feel unique to YOU.

The One Thing Brides Forget COnstantly

Extra florals.

I'm begging you. Ask your florist for loose cut florals and greenery.

Florals make SUCH a huge difference in flat lay photos. Even just a few extra blooms or greenery clippings can completely elevate your details and make everything feel more cohesive and intentional.

Ask your florist to set aside:

  • Loose blooms
  • Greenery clippings
  • Ribbon
  • Small floral scraps
  • Extra boutonniere flowers

The Most Importat Detail Item: A Full Invitation Suite

If there is one thing I never want brides to forget, it's a full invitation suite.

And I mean the FULL suite. Not just the invitation card.

Include:

  • Main invitation
  • RSVP card
  • Envelopes
  • Wax seals
  • Save the date
  • Menu
  • Programs
  • Place cards
  • Custom napkins
  • Matchbooks
  • Vow books
  • Hand written notes

Paper goods help build the foundation of flat lay photos and make everything feel layered and intentional. Be sure to set aside at least two copies of your invitation suite for your photographer.

What I personally bring as your photographer

I do bring a small styling kit with me to weddings that include ribbons, styling mats, pearls, and small styling pieces. But, the best detail photos always happen when we combine styling pieces with YOUR actual wedding details and aesthetic.

The goal is never to make your gallery look like someone else's Pinterest board. I want your details to feel personal to your wedding and fit the overall vibe of the day, whether your wedding i colorful, editorial, timeless, romantic, modern, or classic.

I really try to feel out the vibe of the wedding when styling details instead of forcing every wedding into the exact same look.

Texture make a huge difference

One thing that instantly elevates flat lay photos is texture.

Linens, ribbons, layered paper, silk, velvet, and soft fabrics all help add dimension and depth to your images. Without texture, flat lays can sometimes feel a little flat or empty. That's why details like silk ribbon, linen napkins, veils, velvet ring boxes, layered paper goods, fabric textures photograph SO beautifully.

Things that can make flat lays feel empty

In my opinion, the biggest thing that makes detail photos fall flat is simply not having enough details to work with. When couples only bring rings and an invitation, there's not much to build from.

The more intentional details you include, the more layered, elevated, and luxury your photos will feel. This doesn't mean you need expensive designer items. It just means we need enough pieces to tell the story well.
